We were originally supposed to go to Athens on day five of the cruise and then Rhodes on day six, but because of a strike by the different local services (like garbage and transportation) we postponed the trip to Athens a day. We were lucky to have the strike be finished by the time that we went to Athens, however below is a picture of the view that was throughout the city due to the strike. We were also fortunate that there was not a lot of trash piled up in the areas where the different tourist sights were.
We did not have a tour planned for Athens and decided instead to hop on a sightseeing bus. It took about twenty minutes to get the Athens from the port. Our first stop was Hadrian's gate, which was built to honor the emperor Hadrian. On the other side of Hadrian's gate is the Temple of Zeus. The collums that still exist are massive and when the temple was fully intact, I imagine it was a very impressive structure.
From the temple of Zeus we walked to the old stadium where the first modern olympic games were held. We then hoped back on the sightseeing bus and saw different government buildings and statues as we made our way to the Acropolis.
The bus dropped us off at the base of the hill leading to the Acropolis. Along the wide walk way there were many people selling artwork, souveniers and jewelry. I thought the view of the Acropolis was most impressive from far off, but we made the long stroll up to the top just the same.
After the Acropolis we walked down the hill to get back on the bus and head back to the port. On our way we saw more shops and vendors selling things. It was a very warm beautiful day and a lot of fun walking through Athens and seeing all these different historical sights.
